Office-Use vs. Patient-Specific Medications
Office-Use Medications
Office-use medications are administered by healthcare providers in a clinical setting. These medications can be ordered in bulk from 503B outsourcing facilities like ours, without requiring individual prescriptions. This allows providers to maintain an inventory for treating multiple patients as needed. All office-use medications are manufactured in compliance with the FDA’s Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations, the same high standards used for commercially available branded and generic drugs.
Patient-Specific Medications
Patient-specific medications are those that patients self-administer (e.g., oral capsules). These require a provider-issued patient-specific prescription, which is then processed by our 503A compounding pharmacy and shipped directly to the patient.
503A Compounding Pharmacies
503A compounding pharmacies prepare prescription medications based on the standards outlined by the United States Pharmacopeia. These pharmacies are only authorized to dispense medications after receiving a patient-specific prescription, meaning they must wait for a prescription before compounding any medication.
503B Outsourcing Facilities
In contrast, 503B outsourcing facilities manufacture prescription medications in accordance with the same Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) regulations followed by pharmaceutical manufacturers of FDA-approved, commercially available branded and generic medications. This cGMP compliance means outsourcing facilities manufacture rather than compound medications. These facilities fulfill orders, not prescriptions, for medications, typically in bulk quantities (though smaller orders are also accepted). Orders are placed by licensed healthcare providers, clinics, hospitals, and other organizations, and no prescriptions are required for medications distributed by outsourcing facilities.
